Sightseeing In Inisfree

To begin your tour of Inisfree we will go to where it all began "Castletown Railway Station" where Sean Thornton disembarked the train looking for directions to "Inisfree". This is a great opportunity for the real Quiet Man Fan to experience the beauty of Connemara as it is today and to imagine it as it was when the film was shot nearly sixty years ago. But for the genius of John Ford and his ability as a director to capture the beauty that he saw and with the help of his friend Lord Killanin, not forgetting Mother Nature of course these locations would now be gone and lost forever. On your tour you will visit all the existing outdoor locations used in the film and you will get an opportunity to stand where the stars stood nearly sixty years ago and even become Mary Kate, Sean Thornton or MichiliĀn for a short moment in time.

You will be taken to the outer most parts of Connemara to where the race for the bonnets scene was shot, returning through the lovely Maam Valley and to the village itself where the "White O'Morn" stood, this was to become the home of Sean Thornton and Mary Kate Danagher. Travelling on through Joyce Country you will take in some breathtaking views of Lough Corrib and Castle Kirk and other locations used when the courting couple escaped from the watchful eye of MichiliĀn.

Arriving in Castletown( Cong) you can still see Dan Tobin's Cottage, Danagher's farmhouse, the Rev. Playfair's home where people still live today and of course that most famous landmark of all "Pat Cohan's Bar". There are many other locations here which can be clearly seen as we take a stroll around the village stopping off of course at that famous land mark"Pat Cohan's Bar" for a tipple of you choice.

Of course a visit to Inisfree would not be complete without stopping of at Ashford Caste" which dates back to the 13th century and has since become one of the most prestigious hotels in the world today. It was here that the cast stayed during their short but exciting visit to Ireland. There are many other locations here for you to see as well. You can stroll at your ease where the Sean and Mary Kate walked out as a courting at couple for the first time under the watchfull eye of Michilin and see where Fr Longergan struggled and lost his big salmon and of course a stop off at Dannaghers farmyard to see where the 'best man in Inisfree' lived may well leave you in fighting form.

In Connemara one ot the most dramatically beautiful views in the world can be seen from the "Quiet Man Bridge" just outside Oughterard, where Sean and Michilin sat to experience the peace and tranquillity of "Quiet Man Country".

Here are some pictures of the locations used in 1951 and the same locations today nearly 60 years on.
